Winter Soldier, originally known as James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes also known as Bucky, is a fictional character from Marvel Comics created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, which was published by Marvel’s predecessor, Timely Comics.
When Joe Simon created his initial sketch of Captain America for Marvel Comics precursor Timely Comics in 1940, he included a young sidekick. The young sidekick was simply named Bucky, after Bucky Pierson (a friend of Joe Simon from his high school basketball team). Following the character’s debut in Captain America Comics #1 in March 1941, Bucky Barnes appeared alongside the title star in virtually every story in that publication and other Timely series, and was additionally part of the all-kid team the Young Allies.
In 2005, the original Bucky was brought back from supposed death as the brain-washed assassin Winter Soldier, and later briefly assumed the role of Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead.
He is an Olympic-class athlete and exceptional acrobat highly skilled in both unarmed and armed hand-to-hand combat and extremely accurate marksman. he is fluent in four languages including German and Russian.
